Each summer I go to at least one drum corps competition. I guess I'm an addict of sorts. I enjoy the music, the energy, the color guard, well...just everything.

Above in the video is a corps called the Bayonne Bridgemen. This video (both parts) is from 1976. In each successive posting, I will show clips of how this art form has evolved.

Some of what you see above still takes place and some of what you see is now considered outdated. I will not tell you much of what happened because you will be able to see for yourself. I know I know I know: I'm not a model, but then again, I live in the real world. At least I did not photo shop this at all. I even took this with my Blackjack mobile phone.

I guess that this picture represents what this blog is all about; honesty. I write and tell you about how I am doing. I share with you the ups and downs, the fun and the routine, and the silliness and the seriousness of life.

Recently I have been doing real well. I feel secure, I am making some good friends out there, and I am having a better outlook on my life. I sometimes wonder why I am doing better. I suppose that jotting them down in this blog helps. I know that there are many of you that are sending me good vibes and saying some prayers for me. I also know that it's a change in mindset on a daily basis...okay...sometimes an hourly basis.

How about you? Are you so bold to be honest with those who are around you? Are you sharing your feelings...your true innermost feelings with anyone? Do you admit that sometimes that you are weak? Have you taken a chance on a life that you have always dreamed of? Just asking.

I wish you all the very best as always!

Your Nashville Friend,

Thom

FINALLY SUNSHINE!!!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_CDRL7QYXB1A/R_lnQ6VqSxI/AAAAAAAAAGc/rll8ReJduqk/s400/redtulips.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5186289986129513234" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_CDRL7QYXB1A/R_lnCaVqSwI/AAAAAAAAAGU/UaZFQAIEJcI/s400/purpleiris.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5186289737021410050" />

Well...Here are some snapshots that I took with my trusty Blackjack phone this afternoon. After all of this rain, it is rejuvenating to have a day like this. I mowed my yard, chopped away at a hedge, did some weeding, did some edging, and took my Greyhounds for a walk along the grounds so that they could inspect what I had accomplished. Taylor the Latte Boy (from Pod Is My Copilot: www.podismycopilot.com) inspired me I guess.

This was the first day that the lawn had dried up enough to cut. It felt exhilarating to cut the grass. I know that that must sound quirky by most of you out there, but if you read the last entry, you would see that it has been tough trying to feel great with all of the rain that we recently have been encountering.

I hope that where you are is as beautiful as it is here in Nashville. I know that there will be rain, but it sure is great when there is sunshine. Get out and enjoy nature.

Your Nashville Friend,

Thom

RAIN RAIN GO AWAY!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_CDRL7QYXB1A/R_VJraVqSvI/AAAAAAAAAGM/7ccZBkjzUUM/s400/raindrops.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5185131556140370674" />

I know that rain is a part of Springtime but come on! My backyard looks like a bog. It has been raining here 6 out of 8 days here. The skies have been grey for a long time...so long that I wonder what blue sky looks like anymore. I really had to look hard to find some joy during this time of year.

Usually it is winter that gets me depressed. You know the cold weather and the bitterness of the stinging sleet against your face can really get to you. I had hoped that the season of spring would help me to feel better. With all of this rain it has not made me feel better so far.

What I have learned is that the season or the weather should not be in charge of my emotional state. I need to find within myself the joy that we all should have to keep us level during all seasons of life. When I go outside and the rain hits my face I now smile because I know that I am stronger than the rain, I am stronger than the grey skies, and I am stronger than the current bleak forecast.

I hope that you are all doing well. If it is raining where you are; don't let it wear you down. Be strong and get out in the rain and smile. Know that you are stronger than what is around you. Hugs are great during this time. If you need a hug, giving one means that you get one in return.

You're gonna make it afterall!

Your Nashville Friend,

Thom

TOM TURNS 200!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_CDRL7QYXB1A/R-19daVqSuI/AAAAAAAAAGE/dwhJAMSeiCM/s400/tom.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5182936690413161186" />

Tom "Ramble Redhead" has published his 200th episode of his podcast! May you experience a newness in life. I have been doing much better. It takes time. I am looking at Easter as a new beginning. I know that I am blessed to have you, my friends, supporting me through my life and I hope that you know that I am there for you as well.

Easter is also is my oldest Greyhound's 13th birthday. It is hard for me to believe that I can be a "daddy" of a teenager. LOL I adopted him 10 1/2 years ago. He is the most loving dog that I have ever met. I'll have to post a few pictures of both of my Greyhounds sometime on this blog.

Well...thank you for patience with me as I was getting things back together. I hope to post more often now that I am doing better. Well...that is how it is for me in my life. Just when I thought that I felt safe and secure in life, something happens that flashes me back in time that knocks the walls of security down all around me. The problem is that it could be a picture, a word/phrase, a song, a fragrance, or even a touch.

During January and into February, I was trying to recover from a series of flashbacks. I really did not go to anyone about it, but just tried to use my own reflections on conversations that I had with a counselor and went back on my Zoloft to help to get me through the rough time. It worked, but it took some time. Some of you who do podcasting realized that I did not comment much during that time and it was because I was putting myself in a "coccoon" during that time just to protect myself.

This evening, I was visiting a podcast's blog and spotted a picture that brought back memories of a bad incident that happened to me. I know that I can't go back to that website for a while because I cannot face that fear until I get stronger. Call me a "weanie" or a "wuss"...however I know how much I can handle. There may be a time when I am stronger and can handle things better, but now I am weak. I am extremely stressed out at work, tired, and running with little sleep. I am not in a position to deal with this head on.

What does this mean? It means that I am being honest with you, my readers, about what is going on with me. If I don't write comments in your blog for a while, please understand that it is nothing against you, but it is just me trying to surround myself for a while. I'll be fine. Just keep on looking in here and I promise to keep you informed as to how I am doing. The first shows flowers that were just budding that were hit by a very cold snow storm. The second picture shows these flowers less than a week later in full bloom being enjoyed by those who visit me. What a dramatic difference a week makes! These flowers endured a lot just to expose their beauty.

The pessimist in me would say that they would pull through because they are a hardy sort of flower. The reality is that last year the same thing happened weather-wise and they did not bloom as well. Most died.

What am I trying to say here? I have learned that sometimes hard times will come to my life. Sometimes it will be tough and I will have to wait a year or so until I can attain what I am seeking. It does not mean that just because I have a set-back that it is not going to happen. It may only take a week, but it may be a year...or longer. The results, from what I've seen, are worth the wait. Look at how beautiful those flowers are! I hope that in some way that my life looks that way in respects where I have struggled to become caring, considerate, compassionate, cheerful, and kind.

Here's to our blooming of our inner self this spring and all throughout the years to come! Hang in there! We are all beautiful inside. Sometimes it takes a while to be recognized as beautiful on the outside...even by us.

Your Nashville Friend,

Thom

2007 Santa Clara Vanguard

Several weeks ago I posted a video of the 27th Lancers. It took me many many years to decide which one because there were so many great ones out there to follow. Watch the video and I think that you will see that you will see that this is an amazing drum and bugle corps. How in the world could a cool, sophisticated, and sexy guy like me like a car that is over 25 years old. Come on! It is cool! No other car is covered in stainless steel. No other car was made to be sporty and extremely safe. No other car is recognized as greatly as the Delorean Motor Car!

I like the gull wing doors. They would be cool. Many think that it would require more space to open those doors, however, it actually is the opposite. It takes less space. I have purchased some raffle tickets to win one. I will find out this summer if I win it or not. It's hard to type this with my fingers crossed.

What is your dream car? Why do you like it? It is clearly evident all around me. People posting bumper stickers, wearing pins, talking about the "glories" of their favorite candidate...yeah...everywhere. It's only going to increase.

I have posted a poll in here to see who folks are favoring for President. Please feel free to vote. Just curious to see who my readers are leaning towards.

I honestly don't know who I am going to vote for. Just when I think one person will get my vote, they pull out of the race, say something that I don't agree with, or they just don't appear to hold the same beliefs in America that I do. Ughs!

The most important thing is to vote. Register yourself and VOTE. I don't want to hear anyone who did not vote complaining about the President. I will keep you informed about that...perhaps! What I wanted to blog about today is the love that we should have for our friends.

I have been surprised lately by the love that I have recieved from those of you who have been there to encourage me as I have been going through a tough emotional time. Some of you have never met me. You have, nonetheless, sent me caring thoughts and words that have encouraged me to push through to brighter days. Just thinking of you and what you have done makes me well up with tears from the love that I feel from you. I am indeed grateful to you and hope that you feel that I have been there for you as well.

Well...coming soon is Valentine's Day. A day when lovers exchange presents to express how much they love eachother. I don't have a special person in my life to do that with. That's all right for now. I am content to be a single fella in this big world. I do have a longing to be a friend and to have friends though. I know that will happen at the right time. Until then, I have you cyber friends to exhange cheerful greetings.

May you have a great Valentine's Day with the one that you love. If you don't have anyone, like me, then I hope that you spend it feeling love from your friends...and me too! I hope that you consider me a friend.

Your Nashville Friend,

Thom

Feeling Upside Down

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_CDRL7QYXB1A/R6eo6WYQN5I/AAAAAAAAAE4/VmDQPH0XuSU/s400/PIC-0001.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5163281218196748178" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_CDRL7QYXB1A/R6eo6WYQN6I/AAAAAAAAAFA/l6GKoYW5K9g/s400/PIC-0002.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5163281218196748194" />
I know that some of you have been wondering where I have been and what has been going on with me because I have not been posting on here. I have not been wanting to listen to all the podcasts that I used to or go out to see my friends or even have fun. It is a phase that I am going through. I am going to chat about it sometime with my friend Tom on Ramble Redhead on his podcast sometime. Basically it is in part due to some Post Traumatic Stress that I have been going through lately and I find that it feels more comforting to "coccoon" myself than to be around people. I'll let you know when I do that podcast so that you can listen and understand me a bit more.

The pictures that you see above are taken with my BlackJack phone when I was recently in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. I passed this building and had to take a picture of it. It was built to look like a building was flipped upside down. There are times that we all feel like our worlds have been flipped that way. I have learned that it is okay to reach out to our true friends during this time and let them know what is going on with us so that they will understand what is going on and possibly comfort us. If you ever feel depressed and you need to chat with someone because you feel like your world is ending, PLEASE call someone and call: 1-800-273-TALK. Life can be beautiful again. It really can. I know. I've been there!

Okay, So Now What?

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_CDRL7QYXB1A/R4WGpJB4HcI/AAAAAAAAAEk/qkFbQLvpVZA/s320/100_0369.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5153673389951950274" />
This picture was taken in St. Petersburg Russia. Guess which one is me. Hint, the other ones are manequins. It looks like Alexander and his collegue were wondering just how to create the country that they had dreamed of.

I have been listening to many podcasts lately and it seems that there are a number of podcasters who were wondering if they should discontinue. I heard that a few have already. It makes me wonder what they will be doing next to have a creative outlet.

The State Legislature will be voting to see if they want to extend my council of which I am the director. If they do not, I will be wondering what my next step will be. What will I do? I really do not know what I would do.

I guess that I will have to take a look at my skills and see what I might be good at doing and see how I could get paid for doing it...legally. I had to add the "legally" part because I know how some of you have your mind in the gutter! LOL

I think that I will be fine. The council has done some amazing things in its 30 years of existance and it serves a great purpose. If the Legislature decides to terminate the council, I am sure that there would be a great outcry which would not go well for them politically.

Evenso, I still wonder. What would I do if faced with that challenge? I know that all in all I would be all right...somehow.

What would you do if you faced the end of the road with your job? No, it's not the house that I currently live in. It is the house that I grew up in. I took that photograph this past summer when I was driving through my old neighborhood. I was too nervous to take a closer picture so this will have to do.

This is where I had my beginning as a boy. I lived in that house and roamed that neighborhood from the beginning of my life until I moved away to college. During my senior year, my parents moved away and I no longer lived there. It was strange. I could no longer call that house my home. I could no longer pull up in the driveway and run in the front door. Those days were over.

A few months later I had graduated from college and moved into my first home of my own. It was a very small apartment in the country with bright red counter tops and paper thin walls. It was certainly no show place, however, it was mine. It was a new beginning.

There are many out there who decide to give themselves a "new beginning" at the turn of a new year. Perhaps you made some "New Years Resolutions" and endeavor to keep them. I hope that they were realistic and reachable. If you have failed already, give yourself a new beginning right now. Don't wait until your birthday or a new year...do it now!

Vote in my poll and leave a comment. I'd like to hear what you thought of my little view of the world. Just a line would be fine. I always like hearing from those who read my blog.

Have a Prosperous, Healthy, and Joyfilled New Year!

Your Nashville Friend,

Thom

What Are Your Plans for New Year's Eve?

I'm planning on having a few friends over for the evening. They live in New Jersey so I do appreciate the extra effort it takes them to come down to Nashville, Tennessee to spend this week with me.

Hugs to you and your loved ones as we celebrate the Birth of Christ!

Your Nashville Friend,

Thom

Getting Ready for the Big Day!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_CDRL7QYXB1A/R2x1xZB4HYI/AAAAAAAAAD4/fS9ys9Rw-Qg/s320/PIC-0056%5B1%5D.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5146617965570432386" />
Well, I am so very excited to host my parents starting tomorrow evening at my house for Christmas. I look back and remember how special that my parents made each Christmas. They decorated, baked, and sacrificed so much for their boys that now I want to return the favor each year.

As I mentioned, I decorated the outside and inside of my house. I went shopping for the right foods for them. I will be driving them all over Nashville to look at the Christmas lights and decorations as well. I will cook for them as well. Perhaps they will enjoy just spending some time with me. They are the greatest parents.

I hope that you will be ready for the holidays. The best way to be ready is to give...of your time, of your talent, and of your love. All the rest is secondary.

What plans do you have for Christmas? Let me know. There are gifts to be purchased, food to be bought, and packages to be mailed. I believe that it is impossible to see people clearly during this time because they are rushing so quickly around that all one can see is a blur.

I do hope that you can slow down long enough to actually enjoy as many moments of the season that you can. There are beautifully decorated trees, colorful lights, choirs singing, and children with a look of anticipation in their eyes. There are the tastes of peppermint candy canes and chocolate candies, scents of pine trees and warm cider, and the sounds of choirs and cheerful greetings of the season.

I cannot afford to give you a gift this year other than jotting things on this blog from time to time. Perhaps you can sense the joy that I have for the season and I hope that you can pass it on as well. It can be contagious.

I'll try to keep up the blogging during the next few weeks even if it is a few lines here and there. Take things easy. It seems like most did not decorate for Christmas this year. Please feel free to vote in this new poll that I have posted. I just do it for fun.

It seems like everyone comes "out of the woodwork" to hit you up for money during this time of year. Is it because they know that it is near the end of the year and you are looking for a good tax write off or is it because your heart is tender because of the Christmas Story? I wonder about that sometimes. I tend to give to "charities" that are visible year-round and just don't appear during this time of year. I also check into what they do with their money to make sure that the large amount of money goes to helping people and not to the staff.

The reason why I give is because I think it is the right thing to do. I don't do it to get people off of my back or to make me look good to folks. I don't do it to get a tax write off either. I like helping others. Who knows? I just may need to ask for some help sometime.

I do hope that you will consider helping out a charity of your choice this year.

I'll be writing again soon. I always like hearing from each one of you. Take a moment and leave your comment. Well, the garland went on fine, but the problem was the lights. Ughs!

First, let me say that I don't decorate like the Griswald Family does! I don't do the animate displays, the lights on the roof, the blaring music, nor the live nativity scene. I'm not a "Scrooge" or a "Grinch", but I just don't want my neighbors to be angry at me for keeping them up due to blinding lights or loud music.

Well, I got the garland up without incident and then I got the string of lights out (without the bulbs screwed in). It was a huge ball of wire...not unlike a Christmas Tumbleweed. It took me an hour outside in the cold to finally untangle the string of lights before I could start to hang the lights on my porch.

As I was hanging the string of lights, it started to tangle again! It was twisting and snagging and getting all tangled up. I had to stop every few minutes to untangle the mess. There must be a simpler way to do this.

The end result looks nice. I screwed the multi-colored bulbs in and then I wove ribbon in and out the garland so it looks good during the day. I'm no "Martha Stewart", but it's no "White Trash" job. I do it for my parents who did it many times for me when I was growing up. They will be visiting me here in a few weeks and I just want things to be really special for them.

Hope that your decorating is going well. Keep and eye out for an upcoming poll. I enjoy viewing the results.

Your Nashville Friend,

Thom

The Mad Dash Is ON!!!

Now that Thanksgiving is over, most people are focused on hunting for the gifts that they need to give to others for Christmas, or Hanukkah, or Kwanzaa, or...whatever you celebrate. People slide into their automobiles, rush down the road ways, cut off other holiday shoppers, grab the best parking spots before someone else does, in order to get to the shopping center that contains the "goodies" they seek.

I know that there are a lot of people out there that are shopping during this time of year because of all of the sales and that is all and well, however, there are those out there just for the hunt. We all like to find what we are looking for and especially at the right price. There is something satisfying about that. Is that all there is to think about during this season?

What is this season all about? Is it pushing people out of the way so we get the right lane to drive in, the right parking spot, or the last item we want before someone else does? Is it all about "me me me"?

This time of year tends to bring out the best and worst in all of us. Our selfishness, and our selflessness, our closed-mindedness and our open arms, and our depression and our joy are usually shown in extremes. Strange, eh?

It was the Christ Child who was born in a manger long ago that spurs on this season for me. I know that you may have other reasons for the season but this is mine. I celebrate my God for His Gift to the world that has brought hope and life to many millions. My celebration is not an oppression of others. It is not a criticism of others. It is a simple joyous expression of gratitude to God that also flows out of my spirit toward others by smiling, giving gifts, and wishing others a Merry Christmas.

If I wish you a Merry Christmas and you are not sharing my belief, then please do not be offended, I am just wishing you joy and happiness during this season...period. Don't scowl back at me, preach your viewpoint, or call me a "Bible Thumper" for if you do, you will show me that you just don't understand my extension of good charity. I certainly do not become offended if someone wishes me a Happy Hanukkah or some other celebrated seasonal holiday. I take it as it is meant.

Well, I did get sidetracked, but I guess since it is my blog I can do that. Hmmm...I'd better not let that power over come me!

By the way, I have completed my shopping several months ago so I don't have to get in the midst of the rush. I wish you well if you are still in the process. Keep hydrated and make sure to bring your power bars!

I enjoy hearing from each of you!

Your Nashville Friend

LOOK OUT FOR THE FIRE TRUCKS!!!!!

I can't believe the stupidity of some folks. I know what you may be thinking; we all do stupid things from time to time and, yes, it is true. HOWEVER, I believe that there are levels of stupidity. I hope that I don't sink to the lowest level in the pit of stupidity that I saw today.

I was walking back to my office building today after eating lunch. I was minding my own business when in the distance I heard the sound of fire trucks. My hearing is not all that great so I knew that they must be close by and to be careful before I cross a street. All of the people walking around felt the same as I did...except for one stupid person!

I know that you may think that he could have been deaf and did not hear the sirens blasting our way. Um...most Deaf that I know are smart enough to look both ways before crossing due to the fact that they listen with their eyes and they are aware of the fact that they need to take this precaution due to the fact that they cannot hear.

However, this person looked and SAW the fire trucks coming his way. He was crossing on a red, when you are supposed to wait for a green. He ran right across the street without care infront of the oncoming emergency vehicles.

Well, we all tensed up! The brakes on the fire trucks squealed, their horns honked, and I heard people cry out, "Oh My God!" I thought that I would see his body fly through the air after being hit by the oncoming fire truck...but he barely escaped.

After the trucks whizzed on by, I looked around. We all looked tense. The lady standing next to me still had her eyes tightly shut. I had to tell her that he made it safely across before she would open her eyes.

I hope that I don't do something as stupid as that. I can understand how we all want to rush here and there, but there ARE times when we need to stop and wait for the traffic of life to pass on by before heading on to where we need to go. May this be a lesson for me, you, and stupid folks all around the world who find this to read.

Thanks for reading this and hope that you have a great day. I hope that you had a safe and fun Halloween. I would like to hear of your adventures so feel free to leave a comment and let me know what you did.

I passed out candy and saw many neat costumes. I remember when a plastic mask and a cheap nylon smock type costume was what I wore for Trick or Treating. Last week I saw a little kid dressed up as a bi-plane and his older brother dressed up as a World War I pilot. That was the best costume I saw.

Well, now Halloween is over and now we look towards Thanksgiving. I have posted a new poll and ask that you take part in voting in it. I'll write in this blog until I can figure out how to post my audio podcasts.

Thanks to all of my friends who have posted comments on this site. I appreciate it...especially since there has not been much on here as of yet. Perhaps more have dropped by without leaving their mark.

Big hugs to you and hope that you'll drop by soon,

Thom

HAPPY HALLOWEEN EVERYBODY!

Still Frustrated

Still trying to figure out how to post my audio files to my website so that I can start podcasting to you all.
